What is a Social Security Card?
A Social Security card contains your nine-digit Social Security Number and is how the Social Security Administration (Government) uniquely identifies you. It helps the Social Security Office maintain an accurate record of your wages or self-employment earnings that are covered under the Social Security Act, and to monitor your record once you start getting Social Security benefits.
Why do I need a Social Security Card?
You need a Social Security card/number to get a job, collect Social Security benefits and receive some other government services. But you don’t often need to show your Social Security card.
I lost my Social Security Card, what do I do?
If you’ve lost your Social Security Card, please read our “Social Security Card Replacement” article.
Do not carry your social security card with you. Keep it in a safe place with your other important documents.
