How We Research Social Security Offices
Where Does Each Office's Information Come From?
Straight from the Social Security Administration. Addresses, phone numbers and hours come from SSA's open office data, updated , and each office was checked against SSA's Office Locator on . Hearing offices and the field offices they serve come from SSA's Hearing Office Locator. The U.S. Census Bureau supplies the map points used to measure distance.
SSA's Office Rosters
SSA publishes its office lists as open data for app developers. Every office page starts from these files:
- Field offices (1,188): the full-service local offices, each with SSA's office code, name, street address, phone and fax numbers, and opening and closing times for Monday through Friday.
- Resident stations (36): smaller offices, often in rural areas, with the same details.
- Video service delivery sites (90): partner locations, such as senior centers, tribal offices and libraries, where you can talk with SSA staff over video.
The Office Locator Check
SSA's files don't always keep pace with its live Office Locator. On October 1, 2026, we compared every office the locator returns with the files, searching state by state until no new office turned up. The check:
- added 0 offices missing from the files, using the name, address, phone and hours the locator shows, including the 7 Social Security Card Centers, which handle card work only;
- marked 38 offices the locator lists as limited-service;
- left out internal support units that appear in the files but don't serve the public.
Office names appear as SSA lists them, with its abbreviations written out ("Ft" becomes "Fort"). Addresses, phone numbers and hours aren't retyped by hand. The one fix: when SSA's record shows an impossible time, such as a 4:00 AM closing on a single weekday while every other weekday closes at 4:00 PM, the page uses the time from the other weekdays.
ZIP Code Assignments
SSA assigns every ZIP code to one field office, and sometimes to a card center for card work. We looked up each ZIP code in SSA's Office Locator on October 1, 2026 and recorded the office it returned, 33,780 ZIP codes in all. Those assignments fill the ZIP code list on each office page and power the ZIP code tool. Where SSA's lookup gave no office for a ZIP code, the tool lists the nearest offices by distance instead.
Hearing Offices and Where Appeals Go
SSA's Office of Hearings Operations runs the offices where administrative law judges hold disability and other appeal hearings. We read the data behind SSA's Hearing Office Locator on October 6, 2026: each hearing office's address, phone, fax and hours, and the list of field offices it serves. That gives 159 hearing office pages, including national hearing centers and satellite offices, and links 1,114 field office pages to the hearing office that handles their appeals.
How Offices Get Their Map Points
We match each street address with the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder, which returns a latitude and longitude. 1,229 offices are placed this way. When an address doesn't match, the office uses the point SSA's Office Locator gives it or, failing that, its city's point in the Census Bureau's 2023 Gazetteer files (1 offices). Distances to those offices are approximate, and the office page says so. 1 offices matched neither, so they appear with their address and hours but no distance. We never guess a location.
How Distances Work
Distances are straight-line miles, not driving miles, so the road trip is usually longer. City pages measure from the city's Gazetteer point. The office finder measures from the center of the ZIP code you enter (2023 Census Gazetteer) or from your device's location if you allow it. Video service sites show up when they are within 60 miles.
How Hours and Open Now Work
Hours are SSA's opening and closing times for each weekday. Social Security offices are closed on weekends and federal holidays. The open-now line uses the office's local time zone, set from its state, and from its longitude in states split by a time zone line. Weather and emergencies can close an office on short notice; SSA posts those on its office closings page.
Which Pages Search Engines See
Office, hearing office, state, guide and site information pages are open to Google and Bing. City pages are open to Bing and ask Google not to index them, because each mostly repeats offices that already have their own page. Every visitor and crawler gets the same page.
How We Keep It Current
SSA updates its office files when offices change. When a new file appears, we compare every office with the last version, flag offices that moved, opened or closed, and rebuild the pages. Each office page shows the date of the SSA data behind it. The whole roster was last checked against the Office Locator on October 1, 2026.
SSA's Office Locator is the official word on which office serves your address, and every office page links to it. Check it, or call the office, before you make the trip.
How the Guides Are Written
The 8 guides draw their facts from ssa.gov pages only. Each fact is stored with the page it came from and the date it was checked, an automated check confirms every figure traces back to those pages, and each guide shows its review date. The guides put SSA's rules in plain words; SSA's own instructions still decide your case.
Who Checks the Site
The SS Office Location Editorial Team researches and checks every page. It compares office, hearing office and guide facts with SSA's data and pages and records the date of each check. The editorial policy sets out the standards each page meets.
Corrections
If an office has moved, changed its hours or phone number, or closed, tell us through the contact form with the page address and what changed. We check each report against SSA's data and the Office Locator and fix the page when they confirm it.
