What to Do if Your Social Security Office Closed or Moved

What Should You Do if Your Social Security Office Closed or Moved?

If your Social Security office closed, check SSA's Office Closings and Emergencies page first. It lists, by state and ZIP code, the few offices that are temporarily closed to the public or helping people by phone only. Every Social Security office also closes on federal holidays. If your office moved, use the Which Office Serves My ZIP? tool to find the office that serves you now, then confirm the address in SSA's own locator.

A closed door at your Social Security office usually means one of three things: a federal holiday, a short emergency closing, or an office that has moved. Each has a different fix. This guide covers how to tell which one you are facing, where to go instead, and what happens to your appointment.

Social Security Office Closed Today? Check SSA’s Closings List

SSA keeps one page for this: Office Closings and Emergencies. It is organized by state. Under each state you see either “All offices are open at this time” or a list of affected offices with their ZIP codes.

The page covers the small number of offices that, for a time:

  • serve people only by appointment, for example during construction or when the office cannot let people wait outside; or
  • are closed to the public, with help offered by phone only.

To check your office before you leave home:

  1. Open SSA’s closings page and jump to your state’s letter.
  2. Look for your office’s city and ZIP code in that state’s list.
  3. If your office is listed, read the dates. Some closings last one afternoon. Others say “until further notice.”
  4. If the ZIP looks unfamiliar, enter it in SSA’s Field Office Locator to confirm which office it belongs to.

Each state on the page also has a Subscribe link. If your office has closed before, or bad weather is coming, sign up for your state so you hear about changes without checking every day.

How to Read a Closing Notice

Entries on SSA’s list come in a few kinds. Some last one afternoon, such as an office that stops in-person service at midday and keeps answering its phone until closing time. Others run for set dates, often for construction, or say “until further notice.” Same-day entries are why it pays to check the page on the morning of a visit, not the night before.

A lobby closing doesn’t stop the office’s work. When SSA lists an office as helping people by phone only, it still works your case. Staff answer calls even though the lobby is shut. You do not need to find a different office for most tasks.

Federal Holidays When Every Social Security Office Closes

SSA says plainly that all Social Security offices are closed on federal holidays. These are the 2026 dates from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Holiday 2026 date Day
New Year’s Day January 1 Thursday
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. January 19 Monday
Washington’s Birthday February 16 Monday
Memorial Day May 25 Monday
Juneteenth National Independence Day June 19 Friday
Independence Day (observed) July 3 Friday
Labor Day September 7 Monday
Columbus Day October 12 Monday
Veterans Day November 11 Wednesday
Thanksgiving Day November 26 Thursday
Christmas Day December 25 Friday

July 4, 2026 falls on a Saturday, so the federal holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. Offices are closed that Friday.

Plan around Monday holidays. Five of the eleven fall on a Monday, which turns them into three-day closings. If you need to visit that week, book an appointment rather than walking in.

If Your Office Moved or Merged With Another

Offices sometimes relocate to a new building or combine with a nearby office. When that happens, the old address stops working. Your case keeps going; only the place you visit changes.

Here is how to handle a move:

  • Get the new address from SSA. Search your ZIP in SSA’s Field Office Locator. The locator shows the current address, hours and contact numbers.
  • Check this directory’s office page. Each office page here lists the address, hours and the hearing office that handles appeals. For example, the Susanville office at 2603 Riverside Dr sends appeals to the Sacramento, CA Hearing Office. The Denton office at 2201 Colorado Blvd sends appeals to the Dallas, TX (North) Hearing Office.
  • Know the data date. This directory uses SSA’s office data updated March 9, 2026, checked against SSA’s Office Locator on October 1, 2026. If a move happened after that, SSA’s locator has the newer address.
  • Read your mail. Letters from SSA, including appointment notices and hearing notices, give the office that is handling your case.

If you went to the old site and found it empty, do not wait outside. Look up the office in SSA’s locator and call the number it lists.

Find the Office That Serves Your ZIP Now

SSA assigns you an office based on where you live, so the nearest building is not always yours. To find the right one:

  1. Enter your ZIP in the Which Office Serves My ZIP? tool.
  2. Open the office page it returns and note the address and hours.
  3. Confirm it in SSA’s locator, which also searches by address, city or state.

The office by ZIP code guide explains how SSA matches your address to an office. If your task only involves your card, a card center may be the right stop. The card center guide explains which tasks they take. The Brooklyn Social Security Card Center, for instance, opens at 7:00 AM on weekdays.

You can also browse by state. The Michigan list has 48 offices and the Minnesota list has 18, each with its address and hours.

What Happens to Your Appointment When the Office Closes

A closing does not cancel your case. What you do depends on the kind of appointment.

  • Phone appointment. A lobby closing usually does not affect it. Staff at offices helping people by phone only are still working. Keep your phone nearby at the scheduled time.
  • In-person appointment at a closed office. Use the link in the confirmation email or text message SSA sent when you booked. It lets you change or cancel. If a representative booked it for you, you also need the code they gave you.
  • No link or code. Call 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. Tell the representative you need to change an in-person appointment. The TTY number is 1-800-325-0778.

The appointment guide walks through booking a new slot. If you would rather skip the trip altogether, the video appointment guide covers that option.

If your hearing is at a hearing office that closed, call the number on your hearing notice. Each hearing office page here, such as the Orlando, FL Hearing Office, which serves the Kissimmee office, lists its phone number.

What You Can Still Do by Phone or Online

SSA says its website is the best way for most people to get help. If you cannot use the website, call the National 800 Number or your local office. SSA will set up a phone or in-person appointment if your task needs one.

Channel Works during a closing? Best for
ssa.gov Yes Tasks SSA offers online
National 800 Number Yes, weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Changing appointments, general questions
Local office phone Yes, when SSA lists the office as phone only Questions about your own case
In-person visit No, until the office reopens Tasks SSA says need a visit

Not sure your task needs a visit at all? The Do I Need to Visit an Office? tool sorts that out in a few questions.

Deadlines, Missed Payments and Scams During a Closure

Deadlines. Federal rules protect you when a deadline lands on a day offices are shut. Under 20 CFR 404.3, if the period to do something that affects your benefits ends on a Saturday, Sunday, federal holiday or a declared federal nonwork day, you are on time if you act on the next working day. An emergency closing of one office is a different matter, so if a long closing puts an appeal deadline at risk, call the office or the 800 number before the date passes.

Missed payments. SSA says that if severe weather or another emergency keeps your regular payment from arriving, call your local Social Security office. The number is in SSA’s locator under Additional Office Information.

Scams. Closings and storms bring out impostors. SSA says it will never ask for sensitive or personal information through social media, email or text message. Hang up on anyone who threatens to suspend your Social Security number or asks for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or cash. Report it to SSA’s Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report. The office security guide covers what to expect when you do go back in person, and the full directory home page lists every office by state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Social Security Offices Open on Saturday?

No. Of the 1,231 offices in this directory, 1,194 keep SSA's standard hours of Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The four New York card centers open earlier, at 7:00 AM on weekdays, but still close on weekends.

Is the Social Security Office Open on Columbus Day?

No. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, and SSA says all Social Security offices are closed on federal holidays. In 2026 it falls on Monday, October 12.

Is the Social Security Office Open the Day After Thanksgiving?

The day after Thanksgiving is not on OPM's list of federal holidays, so offices follow their normal weekday schedule unless SSA posts a closing. Check SSA's Office Closings and Emergencies page that morning.

Can I Get Alerts When My Office Closes?

Yes. Each state on SSA's Office Closings and Emergencies page has a Subscribe link, so you can sign up for updates for the state where your office is.

What if My Hearing Office Is the One That Closed?

Call the hearing office named on your hearing notice. Each hearing office page on this site, such as the Sacramento, CA Hearing Office, lists its phone number and the field offices it serves.

Does a Closing Change Which Office Serves Me?

A temporary closing does not. Your office stays the same and serves you by phone or after it reopens. A permanent move or merger can change the address you go to, so recheck your ZIP with the office finder before any visit.
